My name is Tiffany Jones and I am an Impact of Crime facilitator for the Office of Opportunities, Alternatives and Resources (OAR) for Fairfax County.
My role with Impact of Crime is to facilitate a restorative justice class to male inmates in the Fairfax County Adult Detention Center. During the course, we cover nine crime topics (violent crime, assault, drunk driving, robbery, domestic violence, child maltreatment, sexual assault, property crime and drug use and distribution.)
The most important aspect of the class is our group of volunteer victim speakers. Each class meeting, we have a volunteer who has been a victim of the class’ corresponding crime address the men and explain how crime affected their life.
The men are respectful to our speakers, and this process truly helps the men understand how a victim experiences crime. When the men are able to put a face and a story with a crime, we believe it will make it more difficult for them to commit these crimes.
