The American Flag

What does the American flag represent? This is a question that many Americans today do not know the answer to.  "The star is a symbol of the heavens and the divine goal to which man has aspired from time immemorial; the stripe is symbolic of the rays of light emanating from the sun." states a book about the flag published by Congress in 1977.  George Washington once said: "We take the stars from Heaven, the red from our mother country, separating it by white stripes, thus showing that we have separated from her, and the white stripes shall go down to posterity representing Liberty."
Our flag has changed many times but has always represented the same thing. At the time of the signing of the Declaration of Independence, the United States had no official national flag.  The first American Flag was made in 1777 by Betsy Ross.  The original design was a circle of thirteen stars with five points.  In this design the 13 stars represented the 13 original colonies.  The next version had 15 stars and was in use for 23 years.   The flag then had to be redone everytime a new state or province was added.  In 1960, todays flag as we know it was made.  This was because Hawaii entered into the US, making 50 states.  There is now a proposed flag that had 51 stars just incase another state is added!

Americans have been proudly displaying the flag at businesses, homes, on pins and almost anything you can think of.  Even in the hardest of times the flag has always brought joy to people.  During wars, depressions, and economic hardships America has still proudly waved its flag. We all must show respect for it to show honor for our troops and country
