I'm Lovin it!...The history of McDonalds!

Note: Click Here for Miss Maryland's visit to McDonalds!

Can you imagine a world where there were only one McDonalds? Well, believe it or not one day a long time ago that’s exactly the way it was. Even good old Micky D’s started as one and grew into the huge chain that we know it to be today. I was checking out an article about upcoming chains and it dawned on me that we must be one of the most food driven societies in the world! We get excited when a fast food place comes out with a new value meal and we throw a fit if the drive thru lane is to long!

I decided that I would take a look into the history of the place the us Americans hate to love and love to hate.

McDonalds first started as a small hamburger stand in San Bernardino, California that was owned and operated by two brothers, Dick and Mac McDonald. It was known as a hot spot for the local teens in San Bernardino and Barb B Que was their specialty. Sure, they sold hamburgers for a whopping fifteen cents a burger but the big hit there was the milkshake. They were spun by something called a Multi Mixer and people lined up around the block to buy them! Well, to make a long story short, the main distributor of this famous milkshake maker went by the name of Raymond Albert Kroc. When he heard that this little stand was doing so well he picked up his stuff and headed west to find his fortune. He joined the brothers and opened up the second McDonalds in 1955, which was not just a stand but a real restaurant, in Des Plains Illinois. The first days revenue was $366.12. In 1955 that was a heck of a lot of money! One after another they were popping up everywhere and America was changed! We were burger bound and milkshake happy! It was like the re-invention of sliced bread. People everywhere were going crazy over the simple but mouth watering cheese burger. The building in Des Plains Illinois is no longer a functioning restaurant but you can certainly still see the golden arches. It is a museum that contains McDonalds memorabilia and artifacts. The most popular being the original Multi Mixer that made that famous McDonalds milk shake what it is today.

Our favorite clown Mr. Ronald McDonald himself was first portrayed by Willard Scott on television is 1963. Before people knew it McDonalds was an everyday household name and in 1965 the company offered their very first stock exchange. Time flies when your having fun and in 1968 the famous Big Mac was introduced by Mr. Jim Delligatti who was one of the first franchise owners. Soon after in 1973 came the Egg McMuffin and the rest is history. It has been booming since then. From the joy that a Happy Meal brings to the support that can be found at any local Ronald McDonald house, the name is everywhere and I think it truly a symbol of the American lifestyle.
