After visiting Detroit with its industrial and cosmopolitan feel it’s quite a contrast to visit the calm and charming Greenfield village. This journey back in time lets us see how American ancestors lived and worked in the past. Located near the Henry Ford museum the village presents its own wonderful attraction. Collections explore nearly 3 centuries of communications, transportation, industry, agriculture and domestic life. It illustrates Henry Ford’s conception that the history of American material progress is a story of the development and growth of agriculture, manufacturing and transportation. Greenfield Village is an open-air outdoor village museum that brings the past to life and gives us a glimpse of what life was like in countless villages and small towns across .
Henry Ford collected not only cars, but also buildings and resurrected them in a “village” on a 81-acre field. Today you can see about 80 historic structures that were built in different parts of the at different time periods and then taken apart and moved to Greenfield Village. The village opened it to the public in 1933. Walking in the village is a hands-on learning experience. For example the old-fashioned way of cooking and making laundry, you can make your own candle and glass flower or print on the printing press.
Some of the buildings in the village are the homes and workshops of the people who invented modern – Ford’s old Michigan homestead is there, Thomas Edison’s New Jersey laboratories, and the Wright brother’s home and bicycle shop.
Every day a parade is held in the village – antique cars, ladies and gentlemen in elegant period clothing, cowboys and street singers. Everything brings you to the wonderful American past. Greenfield village gives you opportunity to try historic transportation: you can cruise on the Steamboat or take a ride in a vintage Ford Model T or Omnibus Shuttle. You also can ride a train pulled by one of the historic steam locomotives. Children and adults can enjoy the Hershell-Spillman Carousel and ride different characters: horse, chicken, dog, cat and other animals.
