SENATOR MOONEY ANNOUNCES SEARCH FOR CONSERVATIVE ENVIRONMENTALISTS

Plans to Advance Free-Market Environmental Policy Mirrors Congressman Roscoe Bartlett’s

FREDERICK, MD – On the heels of Congressman Roscoe Bartlett’s (R – 6) 2nd Annual “Go Green Energy Conference” held today from 10am to 3pm at the Frederick Fairgrounds, State Senator Alex X. Mooney announces his plans to implement and advance free-market environmental policy in Annapolis. Senator Mooney attended the conference, meeting with dozens of business owners who provided input on how Maryland could best approach the issue of renewable energy.

In 2008, Senator Mooney sponsored legislation to create Maryland’s first clean energy center, working closely with Congressman Bartlett, who led the effort at the federal level  The clean energy center fosters private, environmentally-friendly industry and creating "green jobs" for Marylanders in this sector. This year Senator Mooney also supported a "Pay-As-You-Throw" pilot program in Frederick County.  This program encourages conservation using free-market principles by making individuals accountable for how much waste they throw away.

“There is no question that we should be good stewards of our environment,” explained Senator Mooney. “The dilemma lies in how we confront those challenges.” Senator Mooney believes promoting free-market policies will best advance environmentally-friendly measures. Senator Mooney praises leaders like Congressman Bartlett and organizations like the Committee for a Constructive Tomorrow (CFACT), which seeks to advance responsible environmental policy. Senator Mooney agreed with Congressman Bartlett when he said, “Conservative and conservation have the same root.”

Senator Mooney will continue to support environmentally-friendly legislation that creates jobs in Maryland. “In the wake of BP Solar’s decision to lay off employees at the plant and close down operations in Frederick, it is very important for us to remain focused on the issue of job creation,” said Senator Mooney, who reaffirmed his top priority as creating permanent, well-paying jobs in Maryland.

“For too long, conservative Republicans have allowed the left to monopolize environmental policy in government,” said Senator Mooney. “This is a step in the right direction to guide conservation in a conservative direction.”

Senator Mooney asks conservatives to join him to help formulate responsible environmental policy at the state level. Frederick and Washington County residents, as well as others, are encouraged to contact Senator Mooney as he develops a committee to institute conservative environmental initiatives.
