Raife drove to the corner store, about a five mile trip, to pick up a bottle of Merlot to enjoy with the fish that he would be cooking for dinner. He walked around the store and several sets of eyes were on him. Not finding what he was looking for he approached the cashier. "I'm sorry" Raife said, "but I can't find your wine aisle". "not from around these parts are ya?" the cashier said. "Well, no, but what does that have to do with wine?" "It has nothing to do with wine." Said the cashier. "in fact the entire county has nothing to do with wine" "Oh, geeze," said Raife, "so where do I get a good bottle of wine" . "Tennessee" said the cashier. "But, that's where I came from!" Raife exclaimed. "And that's where you're going back to if you want a bottle of wine" "Care for a Moon Pie?" said the cashier. "not the same" said Raife as he walked out.
When he got home he decided to go to his neighbors house to return the creamer cup and see if he could do a little more snooping. He drove this time. He parked out front and walked up to the porch. To his surprise the farmer was sitting on the porch in the rocking chair. Again the farmer smiled and nodded. "Hey", Raife said, "you told me you didn't know the woman in this house". "Sorry Son" said the old man. "I told you I do know something about the woman in the house, remember?" Technically the man was correct, that is what he said. Raife shook his head and knocked on the door. When the door was opened Raife smelled a beautiful odor. It wasn't perfume or candles. Raife couldn't quite place it. "Here's your cup" said Raife. "Did you know they have no wine around here?" said Raife. "Yes, tall man, remember, I live here" "So, what's your story anyway" "what's my story?" the woman said. "Ya, like, what's up with the living room. Are you into minimalism or something?" For the first time she laughed. It was a great laugh. A passionate laugh. "You weren't a boy scout were you?" said the woman. "why do you ask?" said Raife. "Well, you want wine and the closest wine is almost two hours away. Wouldn't a boy scout be prepared?" "You didn't answer my question" said Raife. "I'll tell you my story if you buy me a glass of wine" she said with a smile. This time they both laughed. She grabbed her coat and they headed out the door. "night daddy" she said as she passed the old man. "Yep" said the old man. Raife looked back at him as he descended the porch steps. The old man nodded and smiled knowingly.
