Location: Thomas Jefferson Community Theatre, 125 South Old Glebe Road, Arlington (View Map)

Description: BalletNova (formerly The Center Dance Company/Arlington Center for Dance) presents The Nutcracker on December 3 6, 2009 at the Thomas Jefferson Community Theatre in Arlington, VA, expanding to six performances this year. Connor Walsh, a Principal Dancer with the Houston Ballet, will dance the Cavalier role in the last three performances (Saturday, December 5 at 7:30 PM; Sunday, December 6 at 1:00 and 5:00 PM) partnering BalletNova dancer (and McLean resident) Ellen Overstreet in the Sugar Plum Fairy role. On Opening Night, Thursday, December 3, tickets are available at a discount. And for the first time, as part of the BalletNova Outreach Program, over 350 tickets are being made available free to children and families from economically disadvantaged communities. BalletNova is committed to sharing the art of dance with everyone, irregardless of their ability to pay for tickets. Choreographed by Nancie Woods and Caroline Frankil Warren to the familiar Tchaikovsky score, BalletNovas full-length Nutcracker leads you through the magical story of Clara and her mysterious Uncle Drosselmayer (a magician who can stop time) and her adventures with giant mice, life-size dolls, faeries, beautiful Snowflakes and a lush Kingdom of the Sweets. A sophisticated 1940s Party Scene sets the tone for the family-friendly 1 hour and 45 minute performance (with one 15 minute intermission). Guest artist Connor Walsh began his training at the age of 7 under the direction of his mother Constance Walsh (a BalletNova faculty member and choreographer). A native of Fairfax, Virginia, he has trained at some of the best schools in the nation including The Kirov Academy of Ballet, The Harid Conservatory, and Houston Ballets Ben Stevenson Academy. During his time at Houston Ballet he received awards such as the Rudolf Nureyev Foundation Scholarship and the Ben Stevenson Scholarship award. In 2004 he was awarded the first annual gold award from the National Foundation for Advancement in the Arts (NFAA). His most recent achievement took place at the 2004 Shanghai International Ballet Competition where he was given the award of encouragement. Mr. Walsh was promoted to principal dancer in September 2007, and appeared as a guest artist with BalletNovas The Nutcracker in 2008 Advance sale tickets range from $14 - $25 (lower Thursday night prices from $8 - $20), with special prices for Students under 18 and Seniors - all tickets are an additional $3 if purchased at the door, Groups of 10 or more receive a 10% discount.
