American Holland
By: Masha Persanova

Holland, Michigan is the home to the world famous Tulip Time festival each May. During this time thousands of tulips are blooming as the town celebrates its Dutch heritage. Tracing its roots to 1927, the event has grown to include wooden shoe clad “klompen” dancers, an authentic Dutch street scrubbing parade and variety of other entertainment.

I was surprised seeing several windmills around the town. They help to transfer your imagination to one of the most beautiful and unique European countries. Windmill Island, an oasis within the city, features a 240 year old working Dutch windmill “De Zwaan” (meaning graceful bird).

Traditions like Dutch Winter Festival and treasures such as the Big Red lighthouse and beautiful bronze statues throughout the town help tell the story of Holland’s rich history and strong values.

The Victorian downtown is decorated by beautiful statues; one of them is Pledge of Allegiance – a delightful collection of children honoring the flag. Adding to the city’s charm is a beautiful beach on Lake Michigan where you can enjoy some quiet time or play some beach volleyball. You’ll even catch a glimpse of the Big Red lighthouse the first lighthouse in Holland.
