ANNANDALE HIGH SCHOOL CHORUS STUDENTS PARTNER WITH
The Annandale High School (AHS) Chorus Program, in partnership with the Dietrich Bonhoeffer Gymnasium (DBG) Choir of Eppelheim, Germany, will present Carl Orff’s choral masterwork, Carmina Burana on Thursday, November 4, 2010, at 7:30 p.m. at Cornerstone Church, 3901 Gallows Rd., Annandale, VA. The concert, part of the AHS Chorus Program’s academic performance season, represents a cultural and musical exchange between the two schools. The DBG Choir will be in residency for two weeks beginning on October 25, during which time they will be housed with host families from the AHS Chorus Program, its alumni, AHS faculty and staff and other supporters. In addition to rehearsals for the concert on November 4, the DBG students will tour the Washington metropolitan area, visiting many of the area’s historic attractions. Their touring itinerary includes a visit to the Washington National Cathedral, a day trip to Monticello, and a performance at the German Lutheran Church (which presents its liturgy in the German language) in Bethesda, MD. Completing the exchange, AHS Chorus students will travel to Eppelheim in June of 2011 for 2 weeks, after school dismisses for the summer.
The German Choral Exchange was started at AHS in 2002 by recently retired Choral Director, Carleen Dixon. Now under the leadership of Choral Director Jessica Lardin, the AHS choral students are excited to once again host the DBG students and their Choral Director, Ralf Schnitzer. “This type of music exchange is rather unique, and presents our students with the opportunity to learn about music-making from an international perspective. We look forward to sharing Carmina Burana, a German work, with our DBG partners,” said Lardin.
The performance of Carmina Burana will feature a professional instrumental ensemble of two grand pianos, orchestral percussion, and area professional soloists. In addition to the masterwork, Annandale Singers, AHS Select Women’s Ensemble and AHS Men’s Chorale will perform choral selections, as well as a set of music performed by the DBG singers.
The concert is free to the public.
